How to make Lye from scratch:

1.  place cold wood ashes in ash-hop (ash-hop w/drain pipe or trough)
2.  place non-metal bucket (can use plastic, kiln-fired clay, stainless-steel, or wooden barrel) under drain to collect liquid lye (also called sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or pot ash)
3.  slowly pour water over ashes until water runs clear (then you can put rinsed ashes on garden for fertilizer)
